Team BC Badminton Announced for Canada Winter Games

Vancouver, BC – After months of trials, Badminton BC has announced the athletes selected to compete for Team
BC at the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George, February 13 to March 1.
As Team BC members, these young athletes will be exposed to advanced training and competitive opportunities, as
well as the latest in scientific and medical advances to support their performance at the Games and promote their
development as Provincial elite level athletes.
The Men’s Team will consist of Joshua Liu (Vancouver), who trains with Sian Deng at St. John Badminton Club;
James Ho (Surrey), who trains with Harry Pan and Jacky Ruan at Ace Badminton Club; Duncan Yao (Richmond),
who trains with Calvin Holoboff and Xi Ming at Vancouver Racquets Club; Benny Lin (Vancouver), who trains with
Sandiarto Liauw at ClearOne Badminton Club and Andika Yong at Mandarin Badminton Club; Alex Lin (Vancouver),
who trains with Charlie Lin at Ace Badminton Club; and alternate Allan Ng (Port Moody), who trains with Al Mawani
at Shuttlesport Badminton Academy. The Women’s Team will consist of Qingzi Ouyang (Vancouver), who trains with
Ouyang Jun at Ace Badminton Club; Kylie Cheng (Vancouver), who trains with Harry Pan and Shawn Zhang at Ace
Badminton Club; Samantha Zheng (Vancouver), who trains with Cindy Peng and Harry Pan at Ace Badminton Club;
Alexa Wu (Vancouver), who trains with Ram Nayyar at Vancouver Lawn Tennis & Badminton Club; Jodi Fei
(Vancouver), who trains with Harry Pan at Ace Badminton Club; and alternate Harmony Ky (Burnaby), who trains
with Darryl Yung at ClearOne Badminton Club. The Team will be lead by legendary badminton coach Abdul Shaikh
(Vancouver) and manager Phyllis Chan (Vancouver), current National Champion in Women’s Doubles.
Held every four years, the Canada Winter Games brings together over 2,400 athletes, 1,000 coaches and officials,
4,500 volunteers, hundreds of media and thousands of visitors. It is the largest domestic multi-sport event to take
place in Canada. The Games in Prince George will be the first ever Canada Winter Games to take place on British
Columbian soil, so the designation to join Team BC carries extra meaning for these young athletes.
“They are not just members of Team BC, representing their province at one of the largest sport and cultural events
in Canada,” says Lisa Davison, President of Badminton BC. “They are creating history as Team BC makes its first
quest for gold on home soil.”
For some of these young badminton stars, the 2015 Canada Winter Games marks the pinnacle of their athletic
careers. For others, the Games will be a stepping-stone on the path to Olympic greatness.
