Triathlon BC Recognizes its 2014 Volunteers, Officials and Race Directors

Oct 08, 2014

VANCOUVER, bc – On the evening of September 20, 2014 Triathlon BC hosted its Annual Athlete Gala.  Held at the BC Sport’s Hall of Fame, the Gala celebrated the achievements and dedication of its members; current and past athletes, race directors, coaches, officials, clubs, volunteers and supporters – significant individuals who help weave the fabric of the triathlon community throughout the province.

In addition to a presentation from National Team member and Triathlon Canada Magazine’s Athlete of the Year, Ellen Pennock, Triathlon BC also presented annual Official, Volunteer and Race Director of the Year Awards.   Triathlon BC would like to recognize Rob & Kim Williamson (Volunteer of the Year), Vicki Lundine (Official of the Year) and Craig Somerville (Race Director of the Year) for their dedication and commitment to advancing triathlon in the province.

The Race Director of the Year Award recognizes a current or past race director who has a history of successfully organizing a safe, well-run, sanctioned event.  2014 Race Director of the Year, Craig Somerville, has been revered by Officials as thorough, delivering a safe, fun and fair event that supports the at risk youth population of Prince George, leveraging the power of sport into the community.

2014 Volunteer of the Year recognizes an individual or individuals who are nominated for their outstanding achievements in the community and for upholding the values of Triathlon BC.  This year’s recipients, Rob and Kim Williamson, are recognized for their contribution to triathlon in the community of Nanaimo.  As the volunteer Sport Chairs for the 2014 BC Summer Games, Rob and Kim were heavily involved in the planning and delivery of five youth events over the three-day provincial Games.   Rob and Kim were tasked to work with a challenging bike course and asked to add in two entirely new events (relay/F1).   Outside of their contribution to the BC Summer Games, Rob and Kim also volunteered at Ironman Canada in Whistler, and officiated at many Island-based events.

The Official of the Year recognizes an Official who has contributed to the development of safe and fair play in the sport of triathlon.   Award recipient, Vicki Lundine, recently recertified as a National Technical Official, and acted as both the Head Referee and Technical Delegate for the 2014 BC Summer Games in Nanaimo, in addition to several provincial, national and international events throughout the year.
