Coach Developer is the umbrella term used to capture the roles in the NCCP that are directly responsible for the development of coaches. These include: Learning Facilitators (LFs), Coach Evaluators (CEs) and Master Coach Developers (MCD).
Effective January 1, 2015, a policy was implemented by the Coaching Association of Canada around the Coach Developer pathway. All Coach Developers will now follow the pathway below:
viaSport is the provincial/territorial coaching representative for BC, and is responsible for all multi-sport Coach Developers. PSOs are responsible for their respective sport-specific Coach Developers.
Sport-specific Coach Developers are selected and supported by their respective PSOs. viaSport is also delivery agent of the NCCP Core Trainings.
COACH DEVELOPER SELECTION
When there is a provincial need for additional LFs for specific multi-sport modules, viaSport will open applications for a specific period of time. Applications will be reviewed by viaSport and a selection committee of MCDs. LFs will be selected based on: context relevant coaching experience, NCCP experience and qualifications, academic achievements, geographical locations and availability, and coaching philosophies. For more information about becoming a multi-sport LF click here. Subscribe to the viaSport bi-weekly newsletter to learn about these opportunities as they arise.
Master Coach Developers are typically individually selected by module/task (eg. LF evaluations), as needed, and in discussion with other key MCDs.
All sport-specific Coach Developers are selected by their respective PSOs. Please contact email@example.com to request assistance with the selection process.
All Core Trainings are hosted through, or in partnership with, viaSport. It is strongly recommended that Coach Developers attend multi-sport (viaSport hosted) Core Trainings, to have the opportunity to learn from Coach Developers from other sports. Alternatively, PSOs/NSOs may request to host a Core Training, and take on all hosting responsibilities. Please contact us to arrange an MCD.

Go to the National Core Training Calendar to see a listing of where these courses are being offered throughout Canada. Core Trainings hosted by viaSport are typically offered in BC each Spring and Fall (MCD usually just in the fall, unless demand is higher). PSOs will sometimes host Core Trainings and open them to other Coach Developers. When this occurs, course info will be posted here.
If notice is given three or more business days prior to the start of the workshop, the participant can choose to either:
- receive credit to attend the same NCCP workshop hosted by viaSport
- receive a refund less a $20.00 administration fee
viaSport is responsible for scheduling and organizing all multi-sport LF trainings in BC. Once selected as a multi-sport LF or MCD, one will begin the new Coaching Association of Canada’s Coach Developer Pathway. LFs will engage in Core Training for Learning Facilitators, Content Training specific to the course they will be facilitating, while MCDs will engage in training specific to the tasks they will perform.
For PSOs looking for assistance in organizing content-specific training, pleas contact firstname.lastname@example.org
and a co-facilitation of each course they will be facilitating (one, at minimum) before facilitating on his/her own. For details on training, please go to CAC's Learning Facilitator website.
Each multi-sport LF and MCD will be responsible for completing at least oe co-delivery before performing tasks independently.LFs will be responsible for determining their own co-facilitation, though the arrangement must be approved by viaSport. LFs are not paid for co-deliveries, as it is considered a parf of the learning pathway.
PSOs looking for assistance in problem solving around co-delivery challenges should contact email@example.com .
viaSport recommends a Coach Developer is evaluated within two years of beginning in the respective role. For information about how Coach Developers become certified in their roles, click here. As a part of our commitment to ensuring quality sport experiences, viaSport will cover the cost of selected multi-sport Coach Developers (LFs and MCDs) and at least two Coach Developers per PSO per year.
