Cheer on Team BC athletes headed to Western Canada Summer Games

A team of 427 British Columbians – 334 athletes, 47 coaches, 22 mission staff and 24 managers – will descend on Wood Buffalo, Alberta from August 7 – 16 to compete against the best of the West at the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games. BC is heading into battle as the province to beat, having finished first at the 2011 Western Canada Summer Games in Kamloops, where BC brought home a record 255 medals.
BC’s chosen flag bearer is canoe kayak athlete Alex Brent from the town of Dewdney. Brent brought home an astounding seven medals at the 2012 BC Summer Games, laying the ground-work for him to compete at the 2011 Canada Summer Games and represent Team Canada at the Junior and U-23 Worlds in 2014 and 2015, as well as the Youth Olympic Games in 2014.
“To me, sports aren’t just all competition,” said Brent to Team BC. “It isn’t just about winning. It’s about the thousands of hours that lead up to your race. It’s about pushing yourself to the brink and doing it again.”

The BC Winter and Summer Games have proven time and time again to be an important stepping stone for athletes to make it to the national and international stage. Team BC alumni make up 44 per cent of the 2015 team, including 138 athletes who have previously competed at a BC Summer or Winter Games. Earlier this month there we also 51 Team BC alumni competing at the Pan Am Games in Toronto, including athletics gold medalist, Liz Gleadle and swimming silver medalist, Luke Reilly.
